Newcastle set to raid Molde for new defender

Newcastle United are looking to sign Molde’s Vegard Forren according to a report from the Newcastle Chronicle.

The Magpies have made no secret of the fact that they want to sign a new defender this summer, especially with long term player such as Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini departing, and it appears that they are looking to Scandinavia for their man after this report suggested they are interested in signing Forren.

The 28-year-old defender does have some experience in England having been signed by Southampton back in 2013 but he was a complete flop for them as he never made any appearances for the Saints and returned to Molde after six months on the south coast. He has been there ever since and in his two different spells with the club he has made a combined 124 appearances and has scored six goals.

While Forren didn’t do well the last time he was in England, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez thinks that he has matured since then and that he would be the perfect solution to his current gap in defence.

The speculation has increased enough to make Molde manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make a comment on it, saying: “I can not say much more other than what is written in the media, but I realise the fact that clubs are interested in Vegard.”

“We are also interested in Vegard and I hope that we can agree a deal with him before other clubs. He has only six months left, and players like him we can not force to stay. He only has six months left on his contract.”
