Birmingham hand trial to ex-Premier League right back

Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has confirmed to their official website that Dwight Tiendalli has joined for pre-season. The ex-Swansea right back has been without a club since leaving the Premier League side last year.

Tiendalli travelled out with the rest of the squad to the Marbella Football Centre on Monday. He now has a chance to impress and earn himself a contract for next season.

The defender, who has two caps for the Netherlands, wasn’t attached to a club at all last season. Rowett says this was because of injury, but he is now getting back to full fitness.

Tiendalli won the Dutch Eredivisie title whilst at FC Twente, and Rowett believes his overall quality cannot be questioned,

“Dwight’s one we were aware of last year. He is obviously a free agent, he was due to come in next week but we asked him if he would like to come out with us on tour. He has fitted in really well with the players so far.

“It’s never easy when you turn up at the airport and travel away and train with a new group of players.

“But as you can see he’s a good player, he’s played in the Premier League, has got plenty of pace and he can play left-back or right-back. He’s very versatile.

“We will see how it goes this week, there’s nothing promised either side. It’s just we’ll have a look at him, he’ll have a look at us and see where it goes.”
