Portsmouth close in on 24-year-old striker signing

Portsmouth are to sign Doncaster Rovers striker Curtis Main according to The Portsmouth News. Pompey has so far signed seven players this summer and hope to sign two more, including Main.

Full back Chris Sessegnon has been training with the club in pre-season and he too is also set to join Main at Fratton Park. He played for National League South side Whitehawk last season.

Manager Paul Cook had been looking for one more striker to complete his options ahead of the League Two season. 24-year-old Main looks set to be that very person. He still has a year left on his Doncaster contract, but Darren Ferguson has told the ex-Middlesbrough man that he is free to leave.

Main ended last season on loan at Oldham Athletic. He helped Oldham survive against relegation into League Two, with his parent club Doncaster going down along with Crewe, Colchester and Blackpool.

The forward is now hoping to kick-start his career after it has somewhat stalled in recent years. He earned a big reputation whilst at Darlington, ending him a move to Middlesbrough in 2011. He played 52 times for the club, scoring six goals. He signed for Doncaster in 2014 on a three-year contract but has had injury problems. The ex-Shrewsbury loanee will now be hoping to put all that behind him in the next chapter of his career.

The video below gives Pompey fans a taste of what to expect from Main. Here are all the goals he scored for Doncaster in the 2014/15 season.
