League One side docked 3 points from last seasons tally

The English Football League have confirmed that League One side Bury have been docked three points. This is for for fielding an ineligible player. Callum Styles played against Southend United on May 8th. The points will be taken off last seasons tally.

The deduction means that the Shakers officially finished last season in 16th position in League One, dropping from 14th. The governing body say that Styles ‘was not registered in accordance with League regulations’.

Bury Football Club have since reacted to the news, where they ‘accept the punishment’. They saw they went into the league game ‘believing’ Styles was registered as a player.

The entire statement released by Bury reads as follows,

Callum Styles arrived at Bury FC at the beginning of March and signed ‘trialists’ papers with the club. Following a successful trial spell with the club, Callum signed as an academy player.

However, the transfer deadline to register players with the Football League for the run into the end of the season was 24th March. Bury FC went into the game with Southend United on 8 May believing that Callum was a registered Bury FC player and admit all charges set down on the club and accept the punishment of a three points deduction as Callum completed his registrations forms with the club after the deadline of 24th March.

Callum Styles is registered with Bury Football Club and has joined the Youth Team Scholarship programme for the next two seasons.

The match against Southend is the only time Styles played for the first team last season.
