Key Newcastle defender to return to Argentina

The Daily Mail reports that Fabricio Coloccini has left Newcastle United after eight years. He is to re-join his former club San Lorenzo in the Argentinian Primera Division.

Since moving from Deportivo La Coruna, Coloccini has played 272 games for the Magpies. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year in the 2011/12 campaign.

The 34-year-old previously played for the Argentinian club in the 2000/01 season whilst on loan from AC Milan. The club haven’t hid from the fact they have been trying to re-sign him for the last two or three years.

Earlier in the summer there were several indications that Coloccini wanted to leave the club. He was made captain in 2011, but the lure of returning to Argentina was too much of a pull to reject.

The defender was twice relegated during his time at St James’ Park. However he was also part of the team to earn promotion out of the Championship in 2010. Rafa Benitez will now make it a number one objective to purchase another commanding centre back. QPR’s Steven Caulker has been linked.

Andros Townsend has recently left the club to join Crystal Palace. Dwight Gayle has signed in the opposition direction. Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie is expected to confirm his move to the club in the coming days.
