Everton set to swoop for £1million Championship goalkeeper

The Liverpool Echo reports that Everton are closing in on the signing of Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. The 33-year-old would become Ronald Koeman’s first signing since taking on the job at Goodison Park.

The ex-Ajax shotstopper is likely to trade clubs for a fee in the region of £1million. Koeman is no stranger to working with Stekelenburg, having signed him on loan for Southampton last season.

With Tim Howard to leave this summer, Joel Robles is the only senior goalkeeper at the club. Koeman has been keen to strengthen this position. Newcastle United’s Tim Krul was also believed to be another realistic target of his.

It is likely that the deal will be completed in time for Stekelenburg to join his new teammates for pre-season training on Friday. Last season, the Dutchman made 25 appearances for the Saints. This number was increased after an injury to England international Fraser Forster.

The keeper can count Italian Serie A club Roma as a former side of his. He moved to Craven Cottage from Italy for just under £5million. The season before last, he spent time on loan in France with Monaco. He only played four times for the club, once in the league.

He’ll certainly be hoping to play more in the top flight next season. He expects to challenge Robles for the number one jersey.
