Cardiff City sign up Benin international

Cardiff City have signed Frédéric Gounongbe from Belgian side KVC Westerlo on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

With flop signing Idriss Saadi being shipped out after failing to perform, the Bluebirds needed to get a new striker and have found their man after getting the 28-year-old striker to sign a two year contract with the club.

Gounongbe, who is an international for Benin despite being born in Brussels, is coming off the back of a very impressive season for Westerlo. He scored 22 goals in the Jupiler League last season and will be hoping now that he can do the same in the Championship to make sure that Cardiff can make it into the play offs after narrowly missing out last season.

He becomes the second signing of the summer after they confirmed that they managed to get Lex Immers to sign on a permanent deal earlier in the transfer window.

After signing for Cardiff, Gounongbe said: “Obviously I’m delighted to be joining a club like Cardiff City and look forward to playing in our fantastic stadium.”

“Coming to the UK and playing my football here is a big challenge and I’m excited about performing in front of the Bluebirds fans. Having the club’s famous number nine shirt is a big responsibility for me, but I can’t wait to start pre-season and giving my best for the club.”
