Aston Villa bid £4million for overseas goalkeeper

The Mirror understands that Championship side Aston Villa have made a £4million bid to sign Italian goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. He currently plays for Hellas Verona, who were relegated from Serie A last season.

The 21-year-old has previously been on the books at Old Trafford with Manchester United. Gollini made a total of 27 appearances for Verona last season. That was very much his breakthrough season into first-team football.

Goalkeeper coach at Villa, Massimo Battara, has identified Gollini as someone who can make an instant impact to the club. Not only that, but he has the potential to further enhance his capabilities as a goalkeeper. Roberto Di Matteo is hoping to sign a goalkeeper this summer. That is most likely to result in Brad Guzan leaving the club.

Gollini made his professional debut in September 2014 in a home clash with Genoa. That game finished 2-2. Although his club were relegated last season, the goalkeeper was one of the rare shining lights in a struggling team. With relegation confirmed, the Italian club fear that their talented youngster could leave for a European club.

This is the latest in the many transfer talking points surrounding Aston Villa this summer. It has mainly revolved around who will leave the club, but there have been incomings as well. Tommy Elphick signed from AFC Bournemouth.
