Grimsby Town sign relegated midfielder

Grimsby Town have signed James Berrett from York City on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

While the 27-year-old midfielder, who in the past has represented the Republic of Ireland U21s, was part of a team that went on to have a miserable season and get relegated from League 2 into the Vanarama National, he himself had a decent season after scoring five goals in forty appearances.

This has meant that instead of sticking with York in non-league football, Berrett was able to stay in League 2 after he penned a two year contract with Grimsby.

It is likely that now he is a Mariner that he will be involved in another relegation battle as Grimsby aim to stay in League 2 now that they have finally returned to the Football League but he will be hoping that this time he is more successful with it.

Berrett came through the Huddersfield Town academy and went on to make 35 appearances for the Terriers before leaving in 2010. He would go on to make his name at Carlisle United and became one of their key players over the four years he spent at the club. Since then he has had spells with Yeovil Town and York City before signing for Grimsby.
