Sheffield Wednesday make first signing of the summer

Sheffield Wednesday have made Leicester City’s Elliott Percival their first signing of the summer as confirmed by the club website.

The 18-year-old defender came through the Foxes academy and watched from the sidelines as the senior side went on to claim a historic Premier League title. Unfortunately for him his coaches decided he would not be good enough to break into their first team and was released.

But he will get another chance to break into professional football after he was handed a two year contract by the Owls. It isn’t expected that Percival will break into the first team for a while yet, it is hoped that he will be able to make an impact for the developmental side.

While this isn’t likely to be the signing that Wednesday fans wanted to kick off the summer, it shows that there is a clear thought in the club about preparing for the future.

After signing for Wednesday, Percival said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge of playing for Sheffield Wednesday.

“This is exactly the kind of club where I want to develop my career….I saw the kind of support the club gets at Wembley and that really is the 12th man.”

“Everyone has been really friendly and I have been told the pathway opportunities are very good.”
