Southend United sign Cyprus international

Southend United have signed Jason Demetriou from Walsall on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The 28-year-old wing back was a key player for the Saddlers after signing for them last season from Cypriot club AEK Larnaca and was almost ever present for the team last year, making 53 appearances and scoring four goals. But he has now decided to leave the Bescot Stadium and sign a two year deal with Southend.

While Walsall did make the play offs last season before falling to Barnsley in the semi finals, Southend also had a solid season as in their first season back in League 1 they came close to making the play offs and will believe that they will have a chance of making it into the top six in the forthcoming season.

It was this positivity and ambition that attracted Demetriou to Southend in the first place and after completing this deal, he said: “When the offer came about it perked my ears up.”

“I can see the potential of the club and it’s going places, the manager has a good vision for the team, so it in the end there was a lot of boxes ticked for me.”

“I’m really looking forward to getting started now, we’ve got a good squad here and I think we’ll be up there this season.”

“It’s a great feeling to be involved in the play-offs, but I’m hoping this season with a new club we can go one better and we can get automatic promotion.”
