The Mirror reports that Swansea City and Middlesbrough are very interested in signing Reading right back Chris Gunter. The former Cardiff City youngster has also impressed with Wales at Euro 2016 this summer.
So far, he has played every minute of every game as Chris Coleman’s Welsh side advanced to the knockout stages. Leeds United and Aston Villa are also monitoring the situation.
There is reportedly a release clause in his contract with the Championship club. Aitor Karanka and Francesco Guidolin are exploring the possibility of exploiting that option. Garry Monk and Roberto Di Matteo are also hoping to lure the player to other clubs at the same level too.
The 26-year-old has performed consistently in the last four seasons with the Berkshire-based club. He has amassed over 140 league appearances during that time. Prior to this, he played over 120 times for Nottingham Forest. He had a brief stint with Tottenham Hotspur, only making five Premier League appearances.
There is still two years left on his contract, but the £1million release clause makes him of big interest to many clubs. Of course, Wales are still in Euro 2016 and have a realistic chance of progressing further as well. Gunter is very much in the shop window at this moment in time. A few more impressive showings could see other teams show their hand.
Jaap Stam of course will be very keen on keeping him at the club as well. He only signed a new contract as recently as February at the Mad Stad. He remains loyal to Reading, but if more clubs make their move then he could have a decision to make.
