New Grimsby winger turned down Barnsley move

Grimsby Town’s new signing Rhys Browne turned down a move into the Championship with Barnsley to hook up with Paul Hurst at Blundell Park, according to a report on BBC Radio Humberside.

The highly-rated 20-year-old was subject to bids from the Tykes, as well as big spending National League outfit Eastleigh but opted to join the Mariners for an undisclosed five-figure fee.

And he credits manager Hurst with being one of the main reasons he made the move north.

He said: “I spoke to the manager and can’t wait to get started.

“He called me and we had a long coversations about what he wanted from me and what he saw in me, it sounded good so we got the deal done.

“I had been aware for three-to-four weeks that Grimsby were interested because the manager called me on holiday.

“Spoke to a few clubs in January and then there was Barnsley and Eastleigh this summer but this was the option that stood out for me.

“Speaking to the manager and the way the side play football appeals to me.”

And the Antigua and Barbuda international is ready to excite Mariners’ fans with his attacking style of play.

He continued: “I am quick, pacy and direct.

“I like to get the fans out of their seats.

“I can play left or right wing or just off the striker. I have spoken to the gaffer and he is aware of that.

“Last season was the highest point in my career so far, not playing under-21 football made me a man and I am very ambituous – the sky’s the limit.

“I want to be playing every week and take the club as high as possible because they have shown faith in me.”

Browne played 37 league games for Aldershot last season, scoring six times, including one in a 4-3 defeat to the Mariners in April.
