Charlton Athletic: Former midfielder declares challenge of promotion next season

Former Charlton Athletic midfielder, Andrew Hughes, has heeded warnings of the fight ahead for Charlton Athletic. Specifically stating that it will be harder than their promotion fight back in 2012, according to local reports.

The current first team coach at Huddersfield Town, Andrew Hughes has heeded warnings.

The warnings lay out the challenge and the fight ahead for Charlton, as they are preparing to attempt a “bounce-back” promotion from the Sky Bet EFL One.

The warnings declared by Hughes state that the Addicks are going to have a tougher time than in 2012.

Hughes was a member of the 2012 side, which was lead by Chris Powell, and saw Charlton finish at an impressive 101 points, and maintain that apex position for the majority of the season.

It may also be worth nothing that Charlton are at 5 / 1 odds to be promoted by the end of the upcoming season, making the Addicks one of the greatest favourites.

Andrew Hughes had the following specifics regarding Charlton’s challenge next season.

“He is a manager who has got experience of around 800 games and knows what you need to get out of League One.

“Off the pitch the whole set-up is superb in terms of the infrastructure — but you can’t have it amazing there, take your eye off the ball in the league and be messing around with managers.

“The fans have got a right to their opinions but it seems to be, from a distance, that the owner is not going anywhere.

“Everyone needs to get behind the manager, staff and players that are still there — like Chris Solly and Johnnie Jackson. And there are young players like Jordan Cousins, Nick Pope and Callum Harriott, who are going to be the core of the team to lift them back up.

“It’s up to the manager to recruit the right players to blend into the squad and are up to the task — because it will be a tough test. It won’t be like that season under Chris Powell.

“The results are there to see — 101 points. We had a manager who had taken over before the previous season ended and knew what he had to get rid off.

“The new head of recruitment will need to work closely with Russell because teams like Sheffield United and MK Dons will be doing the same. Then there are clubs like Bristol Rovers who have come up and are looking to kick on.

“You have got to have those right types. I look at Bolton Wanderers and Phil Parkinson taking over there. He is another that has had success at this level. It will be an interesting league next year.”
