Wycombe win hotly contested race for non-league sensation

Wycombe Wanderers are the club to win the race to sign in-demand Boston United striker Dayle Southwell. The 22-year-old has spent the last few weeks speaking to various League One, League Two and National League clubs. He signs a two-year deal.

Southwell scored 54 goals in 86 matches for National League North side Boston, who reached the play-offs last season.

Boston manager Dennis Greene used to play for Wycombe as a striker. He resigned himself to the fact he was likely to lose his star striker this summer.

Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth says Southwell deserves the chance to step up into full-time football,

“Dayle is a player who’s been on our radar for some time and I’m thrilled to be able to bring him here. There were a lot of clubs looking at him but we know we can offer him a real opportunity to make his name in the EFL and develop his potential even further.

“He’s a physical striker who knows where the goal is and I’m confident that his all-round play will benefit us. It’s a great step up for Dayle and I think he could prove to be a really exciting signing for us.”

Boston chairman David Newton wanted to thank the former Grimsby man for his efforts at The Jakemans Stadium,

“The club would like to put on record our thanks to Dayle for the hard work and dedication that he showed while playing at Boston United.

“We are delighted that Dayle has progressed to such an extent where he will now be playing professional football at League Two level.

“We wish him well and look forward to watching his career develop further.”

Boston will be entitled to a compensation fee for their departed forward. The deal has yet to be officially completed, but the paperwork is currently being submitted.
