Leeds move for promoted League Two star in doubt

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Leeds United’s move for Kemar Roofe is now in some doubt. This is because Oxford United will only entertain bids of at least £3million for their top scorer.

This week, the Whites expected to confirm the signing of Kalmar striker Marcus Antonsson. Therefore, signing 23-year-old Roofe as well could be too much of a stretch.

Roofe fired in 26 goals last season as Oxford earned their place in League One for next season. New Leeds manager Garry Monk is hoping to strengthen his squad this summer. He did make Roofe one of his number one targets.

It remains to be seen if the Elland Road club will revisit the situation at some stage. The transfer window remains open for a little while yet. Owner Massimo Cellino will still be hopeful of concluding a deal.

The club are still interested in Manchester United striker Ashley Fletcher. He too has been linked with several Championship clubs in the process. This would require Leeds to pay a compensation fee to sign him up.

Roofe still has another two years to run on his Kassam Stadium contract. Should they sell him, then a percentage of any fee would be owed to Roofe’s former club, West Bromwich Albion.
