Aston Villa: Sánchez says Colombia must “stay focused”

Carlos Sánchez, who is on Copa America duty with Colombia, says they must stay focused to beat Peru reports The National.

The Quibidó-born 30-year-old midfielder, who cost Aston Villa £4.5m from Spanish side Elche, warns that a semi-final place will evade them if their focus drops. Colombia have waited 12 years to qualify for a Copa America semi-final and Las Blanquirrojas now stand in their way.

The Aston Villa man has placed a premium on the mental preparations that Colombia must show to overcome Peru, who controversially knocked Brazil out of the competition.

Speaking to a press conference, the Villa midfielder said that a sense of mental fortitude is needed to see his team through this knock-out fixture. Sánchez said: “Our physical aspect is fundamental, but a lot of games are usually won by the mental aspect.”

He then went on to stress how preparation is always key for big games, readiness making the big difference at times. On this matter he stated: “I think the team that prepares better mentally for this game will make the difference. In today’s age, everything is a lot more equal and the games are won by little things.”

He also mentioned that his Colombia team will come up against a Peruvian outfit that’s improving all the time. Continuing with his comments to the press conference, the midfielder said: “Peru have demonstrated an important power, and it is a team that is always getting better.”

Since signing for Villa from Elche, Carlos Sánchez has made 48 appearances, including 12 as a substitute, for Villa and has scored one goal.
