Gillingham sign Newport County midfielder

Gillingham have signed Mark Byrne from Newport County on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The Irish midfielder is one of the many players who have impressed for the Exiles since they were promoted to League 2 but this time the South Wales club were unable to keep a hold of him after he signed a two year deal with Gillingham.

The signing of Byrne is unsurprising as he’s been a favourite of Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh for a while now. After initially playing for him at Rushden & Diamonds, he moved with him to Newport and helped them get promoted into the Football League and consolidate their place in that league.

Now Byrne will hope to get Gillingham into the League 1 play offs. After a bright start to last season, the Gills ended up finishing the season poorly and dropped out of the play off places and ended up in 7th place.

After signing, Byrne said: “I’m delighted to sign, I’m happy to be here and looking forward to getting started,”

“I’ve worked under Justin before, and when I found out there was interest from him and the club, I was more than happy to work with him again.”
