Presenting the inside scoop on the latest Football League news
Charlton Athletic

Charlton’s chances of holding onto midfielder diminish

On Tuesday the 14th of June, Iceland took on Portugal, which saw a 1-1 draw, with great effort from a certain Charlton Athletic player known as Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

Going into the game on Tuesday, Iceland were definitely the underdogs, with Portugal being the favourites to grab an easy three points in the opening group stages of the Euros.

However, it was not as easy as Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of his squad believed.

In the first half of the game, Portugal took the lead thanks to the efforts of Nani, making them the side to open the goal sheet.

However, in the second half, the one and only Johann Berg Gudmundsson, or JBG, swung a ball into the box, and Birkir Bjanason volleyed the ball into the back of the net, making sure that Portugal only left their first game at the Euros with a point.

What a great first game for the underdogs Iceland and Johann Berg Gudmundsson, a side which is playing in their first ever major international tournament.

But what does this mean for Charlton Athletic?

Well it is not looking great.

I think as Charlton Athletic fans, we all knew that it would be tough for us to hold on to our Icelandic international with our pointless relegation, back into the crypts known as the Sky Bet League One.

In all honesty, it is looking even more likely that we are going to lose the services of our forward next season, as any teams interested in his services, would have been watching him on Tuesday, and saw his valiant assist as well as the potential he has.

Russell Slade and Steve Head need to start bringing in signings to give me and other Charlton Athletic fans hope. That for all the great players we may lose, such as Gudmundsson, Cousins, Lookman and others. That we see others come in who want to wear the shirt and are proud to be part of Charlton!
