Charlton Athletic: Striker to be fighting fit

It is understood that Scottish striker, Tony Watt, is aiming to be strong and ready for the first friendly against Welling United next month, according to local reports.

Watt spent a large amount of his time on loan last season, including spells at Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers.

The striker experienced an injury in the latter stages with Blackburn, which ruled him out for the rest of the season and saw a return to the Valley for medical treatment.

The injury was largely around a groin problem and required significant surgery which was conducted before the summer.

It is understood that Watt is on schedule to begin playing minutes of football once again next month at Charlton’s pre-season friendly against Welling United.

This news should give Charlton Athletic fans hope, as this means that Tony Watt SHOULD be a fit and strong asset for Russell Slade for the beginning of the League One campaign.

The Scotsman had the following to say regarding his injury, and his plans for recovery.

“I am targeting the Welling game to be playing minutes,” he told the South London Press last week. “I spoke to the specialist and he said it would be another three weeks, just continue your running and that it is all going to plan.

“Obviously I had the operation. In the first couple of days of training it is about getting up to speed and making sure you take the precautions needed.

“But hopefully for the Welling game I will be on the pitch.

“I missed a month of the season but that kind of worked in my favour as the next two months of rehabbing have been afterwards.

“I’m feeling good. After the op I couldn’t rush it or it could pop again. I’m working hard and hopefully I’ll be back.”
