Charlton Athletic: Tony Watt endorses Russell Slade

The Scottish striker, Tony Watt has come out like many others, and endorsed the potential and ability of the new manager at the Valley, Russell Slade, according to local reports.

In the early stages of last season, Tony Watt went out on loan to Cardiff City, where Russell Slade was manager at the time, so Watt understands what it is like to work under the new manager.

Watt was planning on making a permanent move to the Bluebirds, but a trade embargo prevented Cardiff City being able to secure his services on a permanent deal. However, the situation now is that Watt and Slade are both at the Valley.

The Scottish striker had the following to say about Slade.

“I saw his name linked with Charlton and I said I hoped it happened,” explained Watt.

“Because if somebody can fix it, then he can do it.

“He is a very good appointment – the best we could have got. I thought he might have a few Championship teams after how well he did at Cardiff with the budget that he had.

“He can handle the dressing room. He is very, very motivational – I know the way his teamtalks are.

“Russell is hands-on as well. He knows what he wants and he knows what players he wants. That will be great for the club.

“He likes to put his stamp on training but that can be going out, assessing everything, telling his coaches what to do then standing back to watch it.

“Russell got Cardiff back on its feet and he did it in a short time and had to cut the budget.

“I would be very surprised if he didn’t get Charlton, with the right backing, into the top six. But football is a strange game – you never know what happens.

“I saw his interview where he talked about wheeling and dealing. I think he’ll have an idea of who is good enough in his squad and who he wants to see coming in.”
