Moving to Newcastle was not a mistake for Ivory Coast international

Roma’s Seydou Doumbia has said in comments made to Italian website La Roma 24 that moving to Newcastle United was not a mistake.

When Doumbia was signed on loan for the Magpies back in the January transfer window, it was hoped he could get the goals which kept the club in the Premier League. However he didn’t much chance to impress the St James Park faithful, only getting a handful of substitute appearances under Steve McClaren and then being frozen out completely when Rafa Benitez took control, only playing three minutes under the Spaniard. To make matters worse, he now has a relegation on his record.

But despite the fact that many players would regard this move as one of the worst in their careers, Doumbia doesn’t regard it as a mistake and doesn’t blame Benitez for not playing him more. He then admitted that his spell in Newcastle was an interesting experience.

He said: “The move to England was not a mistake.”

“It was still an interesting experience – though not positive.”

“It didn’t go exactly the way that I wanted, but in football, as in life generally, every experience is useful.”

“I was not in bad condition but apparently I did not feature in Rafa Benitez’ plans.”

“I can’t blame him as he makes the choices that he feels are right.”
