Ligue 1 side planning to secure Charlton’s best winger

Charlton winger, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, is set for newly promoted Metz in French Ligue 1 next season, according to the News Shopper.

Gudmundsson was arguably one of Charlton’s best players last season, and was the joint-highest assist creator in the Championship but was still unable to prevent the freefall Charlton witnessed.

It is understood that Gudmundsson had been planning on moving for a while after the Addicks relegation, and with him and his country (Iceland) recently qualifying for their first ever Euro tournament, the winger has drawn greater attention in Europe.

It would seem that the newly promoted side in French Ligue 1, Metz, would like to secure his services in the midfield for their upcoming campaign.

Last July, the 25 year old signed a four year contract with the Addicks, but does not seem willing to play football in League One next season, which many fans at the club understand.

The Icelandic international has made a total of 86 appearances for Charlton throughout his professional career, scoring a total of 16 goals in that time.

Slade mentioned earlier in the week at his press conference, that any key players currently at Charlton will not be leaving the side without a substantial finance package being offered.

Therefore, the Valley should be receiving sufficient finances for the winger, otherwise Slade will simply turn down the offer.

It may also be interesting to see if Gudmundsson speaks out against the current ownership like other managers and former players have after their departure, like Chris Powell and Diego Poyet.
