Former Leeds trialist looking to keep England at bay

Slovakian number one Matus Kozacik has spoken to the Webnoviny website about a 2006 trial Leeds United, ahead of a showdown with England in the Euro 2016 finals.

The 32-year-old came through the ranks at Dolny Kubin and Kosice, before making his breakthrough with Slavia Prague between 2002 and 2007.

And it was during this 55-game spell that the stopper was linked with moves to both Italy and England. He said,

“I was wanted in Italy and in England.

“While in Italy I almost signed a contract, in England at Leeds United, I attended only a short trial, after which I returned home.”

Sky Sports picked up on Kozacik’s trial at the time and the player told them:

“They were satisfied with my performances.

“They wanted me to take part in a weekend’s practice match. However, I needed to undergo surgery.

“Nothing has been finalised. When there is something solid, then we will see.

“If Leeds offer good terms, I think I’d accept. It would be a step forward.”

Since that time at Elland Road, the Slovakian has turned out for Sparta Prague, Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta and current club Viktoria Plzen.

Kozacik has played 110 league games for Plzen, winning the Czech league title on three occasions and also playing against Manchester City in the Champions League.

He made his national team bow in 2006 and has since won 17 caps for his country and is expected to be their first-choice ‘keeper for Euro 2016.
