Trio of League One clubs chase former Rangers striker

Bury, Peterborough and Southend are targeting out-of-contract striker and former Rangers attacker Nicky Clark, according to the Daily Mail.

The 25-year-old scored 24 goals in 110 appearances with The Gers, however was released from the Scottish giants following Rangers’ successful promotion campaign from the Scottish Championship last season.

Clark signed with Rangers in July 2013 upon being released from his contract from fellow Scottish side Queen of the South, netting eight goals in his debut season as The Gers secured promotion from the Scottish third tier. Most notably, Clark bagged four goals in his side’s 6-1 drubbing of Forfar on 3rd December 2013.

The 25-year-old started off the 2014/15 season with a bang, scoring in Rangers’ first game of the season in a 2-0 win over Falkirk. A final tally of nine goals in all competitions wasn’t enough for Rangers to secure promotion back to the top flight.

A less successful 15/16 season saw Clark net six goals, featuring 32 times in all competitions as The Gers finally returned to the Scottish Premiership.

However, despite pledging three seasons and being part of two promotions with the Glaswegian side, Clark was released from his contract upon its expiration at the end of the 2015/16 season, and is now in search for a new club.

According to the Daily Mail, the club closest to acquiring the 25-year-old Scot are English League One side Southend United, with boss Phil Brown and the club supposedly poised to hold discussions over bringing Clark to The Shrimpers ahead of the 2016/17 season.

Two other third tier clubs have supposedly taken an interest in the striker, with David Flitcroft’s Bury and Grant McCann’s Peterborough both hoping to acquire the Scottish striker to bolster their attacking ranks.
