Charlton Champion: Slade will lead a promotion next season

Ex-Charlton striker Kevin Lisbie has endorsed Russell Slade as being able to lead a promotion next season with the support of fans at the Valley according to recent reports.

The former striker who spent his youth career developing at the Valley, followed by an 11 year professional career under Alan Curbishley has come out today and spoke to local press, stating that Slade will get Charlton Athletic promoted next season.

Lisbie spent three years working under Slade at Leyton Orient, where he scored 46 goals, and believes that Slade is almost a perfect fit for the South East London side.

He had the following to say about Slade.

“Russell is a great manager – he picks the right players to win games, like Alan Curbishley. He will get them promoted.

“He knows how to treat players. Most will end up wanting to work with him and do well for him. He would go out for coffees with you to discuss things.

“He is a very hands-on coach. He will always be on the training field, even when he has a number two. It will be very much his team.

“He will not have a particular formation or style he likes to play – he will look at what players he has then play accordingly.

“He likes people around him he can trust and while he is finding his feet, he will need people like Jason Euell to help him get to know the club.

“He had wanted me for a long time and played me where I prefer, as a number nine, which really worked for me.

“I had played off a target man at Millwall which didn’t suit me.”

He went onto say that him and other former Charlton players and legends who had a recent reunion, are saddened by the decline.

“I went to a reunion recently and a lot of people were not happy.

“It will not be easy in League One and the fans need to get behind the players. I was hoping they would get a British manager and it’s great they have.
