Profiles of the newly confirmed Aston Villa coaching staff

Roberto Di Matteo has now officially confirmed his coaching staff at Aston Villa. He will be joined by Steve Clarke, Kevin Bond, Massimo Battara and Massimiliano Marchesi. All efforts will now go towards strengthening the squad for next season.

In the form of Clarke and Bond, Di Matteo has hired individuals who have proven experience and knowledge of this level of football. The other two are close Italian friends of his who have worked at some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Let us go through them one-by-one to gather a bit more information about the new coaching staff assembled at Villa Park.

Steve Clarke – Assistant Manager

The 52-year-old Scot can count upon many years of experience in the coaching sphere since he retired from playing in 1998.

Since then he has served as assistant manager at clubs such as Newcastle United, Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool, before becoming a number one in 2012. He lasted a season and a half as boss of West Bromwich Albion, before he was dismissed after a poor run of form. In his first season he guided the Baggies to 8th, which was their highest league standing since 1981.

He then took on the job at Championship side Reading in December 2014 after Nigel Adkins left the club. Just under a year later he was out of a job after he held talks with Fulham over becoming their next head coach, a job he would ultimately be unsuccessful in getting.

Now he returns to the coaching world, where he’ll be hoping to work his magic on the training ground alongside Di Matteo, who hasn’t coached at Championship level for a number of years.
