Pompey target Chesterfield forward

Portsmouth boss Paul Cook has identified Chesterfield forward Lee Novak as his number one transfer target this summer, according to a report in the Portsmouth News.

The former Huddersfield favourite was recently released by Birmingham but his wage demands are thought to be a stumbling block for the League Two side.

There is also interest from League One Chesterfield, for whom the striker topped the scoring charts with 15 goals on loan last season. Spireites’ rivals Sheffield United and Shrewsbury Town have also registered their interest in the 27-year-old.

Portsmouth News states that Pompey chief Cook is confident of securing his man, providing personal terms can be agreed. In contrast, the former Chesterfield manager isn’t prepared to send his wage budget spiralling out of control to secure the former Birmingham man’s services.

Cook is preparing for a busy few weeks in the transfer market, having had two bids for Spireites’ midfielder Jay O’Shea turned down, whilst also monitoring the Blades’ Kieron Freeman, who spent time on loan at Fratton Park lasts season, as well as Duane Holmes, recently released by Huddersfield.
