Leeds United legend Tony Yeboah hits 50

It isn’t often that a player impacts a club with such force that he is remembered as a ‘crowd favourite’ and one whose name is nectar on the lips of football fans a generation later. It’s even more rare when the player in question only spent two seasons at a club.

However, one of those players, revered and almost worshipped by Leeds United fans is the great Tony Yeboah. Even now, a generation later, Tony Yeboah is still fondly remembered by Leeds United fans who witnessed his power and majesty whilst wearing the colours of Leeds United.

To see Tony Yeboah play was that rare opportunity to see grace and bestial power melded in the same player. To see Yeboah play was a simple pleasure. Put it this way, when he hit it, it stayed hit.

Today Tony Yeboah turned 50, and he is a name that many remember with great fondness at Elland Road and beyond into the wider fanbase.

Tony Yeboah, the immensely powerful Ghanaian who had, some said, the biggest thighs in football. Yeboah joined Leeds United, in January 1995 from German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt for a £3.4 million fee. In his second season at Elland Road, Yeboah was voted Player of the Year; in being voted so he became Leeds United first ever non-British player to achieve this honour.

Yeboah scored 32 goals for Leeds United in 66 appearances, and is seen as a cult hero for the Yorkshire club largely due to a series of strikingly, eye-catching goals he scored. A trademark, powerful volley against Liverpool and his equally vicious shot versus Wimbledon in the 1995–96 season were among his goals that caught the imagination of the watching public on Match of the Day where he was a regular in ‘Goal of the Month’ competitions. Yeboah often mentioned that his good form and scoring prowess while at Leeds was down to his love for Yorkshire Pudding.

The word ‘legend’ is bandied around too lightly nowadays, but many would argue that Yeboah is exactly that to them.
