Northampton Town sign Coventry full back

Northampton Town have signed Coventry City’s Aaron Phillips on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The 22-year-old full back came through the Sky Blues academy, which has produced quite a few good players in recent years, and while he had broke into the first team on a number of occasions he found himself released this summer.

However he wasn’t without a club for long as he has now signed a two year deal with Northampton.

The Cobblers have just been promoted from League 2 and are hoping to add players that have experience of the league to make sure that they don’t drop right back down to the bottom tier of the Football League.

Despite his tender age, Phillips fits that bill having made 61 appearances for Coventry during his time there with 26 of them coming last season. Now he can bring that experience with him to Northampton and contribute to next season’s efforts.

After the signing, Northampton manager Rob Page said: “Aaron is a very welcome addition to the squad,”

“He is a young player with potential, but he also has a fair amount of experience in League 1 and that is important.”

“He is a mobile full back with power and pace and plays with his heart on his sleeve. He will be here to battle with Brendan Moloney and the two of them should be able to drive each other on and that can only benefit the team.”

“The players who are already here did really well last season, our recruitment this summer is about adding depth, competition and quality to help and strengthen a very good group and Aaron fits the bill perfectly.”
