Shrewsbury capture signatures of former Port Vale pair

League One Shrewsbury Town have bolstered their squad with the additions of AJ Leitch-Smith and Ryan McGivern.

McGivern – who previously represented Northern Ireland – strengthens Town’s defence after signing a two-year-deal at Greenhous Meadow.

The versatile centre-back started his career with Manchester City before moving on to numerous clubs including Leicester City, Bristol City and Scottish side Hibernian.

Assistant manager Mike Jackson revealed how the Shrews have had an eye on for a while.

“Again it is someone that we have monitored and played against throughout the season. He is a centre-back who can also play at left-back so it will give us a bit of flexibility but first and foremost he is a centre back,”

“He is left-footed and reads the game very well and knows the level. He is still at a good age at 26 so his best years are still ahead of him and we are looking forward to working with him and helping him develop.”

Joining alongside McGivern is striker AJ Leitch-Smith as Micky Mellon’s sixth signing of the summer.

Leitch-Smith started his career with his hometown club, Crewe Alexandra, and went on to make over 100 appearances.

The striker revealed to shrewsburytown.com that he cannot wait to get started at Greenhous Meadow.

“I’m just glad to finally get the deal done,”

“Micky (Mellon) told me about his plans and where he sees the club going, the type of people he wants to bring in and it all fitted into somewhere where I would like to go and we finally got it done.

“I did have quite a bit of interest and had a few offers as well but, in the end, this was the place for me.”
