John Carver returns to management with 20-time champions

Former Newcastle United head coach John Carver has returned to club management with Cyprus First Division side Omonoia Nicosia. This is Carver’s first job since leaving St James’ Park following the culmination of the 2014/15 season.

Carver joins a club which finished fourth in the Cypriot top flight last season, earning them a place in the Europa League qualification rounds. They are also the 20-time Champions of the division, the last time coming in 2010.

The official club website confirmed that Carver has cut short his stay in America to begin his new role with immediate effect. The Cypriot football scene begins in August, with the season lasting until May, just as the British football schedule does.

Omonoia ground-share with APOEL at the GSP Stadium, which is the largest stadia in the top league. Carver takes over from Vladan Milojevic, who left the club at the end of last season after his contract expired.

The statement on the club website also made reference to the fact Carver has served on the coaching staff at Newcastle alongside the likes of the Sir Bobby Robson and Alan Pardew. Carver has also held caretaker managements jobs, as well as outright management roles with Leeds United, Toronto FC and Sheffield United as well.

The technical director at the football club is Nikos Dabizas, who worked with Carver whilst he was plying his trade as a defender for Newcastle between 1998 and 2004, playing over 100 games in the process.
