Newport swoop for Magpies’ defender

Former Notts County defender Scot Bennett has moved to Newport County on a two-year deal, telling BBC Sport that ‘it’s good to be back’ at a club where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last term.

The versatile 25-year-old spent 15 games on loan at Rodney Parade last season and joins the Exiles after his release from Meadow Lane last week.

In a strange turn of events, Bennett joins Newport in the same week that John Sheridan, the manager who brought him to South Wales on loan last season, takes the helm at the Magpies.

After coming through the ranks at Exeter City, Scot became Grecians’ captain and played 141 league games in all competitions for the Devon club.

He joined the Magpies last season but turned out just seven times for the club at the start of the campaign, before joining Newport on loan. His 15-game spell for the club saw him score once in an FA Cup First Round tie at Brackley.

Bennett ended the season with another loan spell, this time to relegated York City, where he played eleven league games.
