Powell ready to form successful Pearson partnership

Newly appointed assistant manager of Derby County, Chris Powell, is ready to provide determined support to Nigel Pearson in their battle for promotion in the 2016 / 2017 campaign, according to recent reports.

Chris Powell was named Nigel Pearson’s number two this week to support the former Leicester City manager next season. In Pearson and Powell’s first official club conference on Thursday, Powell showed great passion and commitment to support Pearson next season.

Since Powell’s appointment he had a very welcoming reception from fans, as he made 101 appearances for the Rams back in the 1990s, before making a move to Charlton Athletic.

To add to that Chris Powell is known for his successful managerial career at Charlton Athletic, promoting them from League One with an impressive 101 points at the top position, showing that the defender, now manager, has the managerial and football acumen which is required.

Chris Powell had the following to say at the conference on Thursday:

“I hope the success I had as a player here happens to me as an assistant manager. I have won promotion from the Championship and I would like to do that again,” said Powell, who played 101 times for Derby.

“I had just under three really good years here as a player and it just feels really right to come back. I am really excited about this opportunity.

“Nigel is a manager who should be in the game – his track record is superb.

“I learned a lot from Nigel towards the end of my playing career and he gave me the next step of my career.

“I learned a lot with regards to management, about creating an environment for people to flourish, not only on the playing side but the management side as well.

“I took that into my next two jobs, which were both successful in my eyes.

“I’m sure people will look at me as being a number two but I feel it’s just another positive step in my career.

“This is a project I feel will work – and we’re all thinking about the same thing and the right thing for this football club.”

Nigel Pearson is pleased to have Chris Powell by his side once again – as Powell worked with Pearson at Leicester City – for the next campaign, and had the following to say about the Assistant Manager:

“It is a unique opportunity, both for myself and the club, to have somebody of Chris’s experience, not just as a manager.

“I have a lot of respect for him as a person and the qualities that he brings to what is already a football club with a lot of positives. It really does mean that we have an even stronger armoury, if you like.

“I know it will be very good for myself but the bigger picture is he brings a very strong football personality to the club as well.

“That doesn’t happen very often and it’s also something I think that speaks volumes about Chris’s personality that he sees this as a very positive step for his own career.

“People will have their own opinions on that but we’ve spoken very openly about this opportunity and we both feel it is very good for us on an individual level.

“And working collectively as a partnership will be very good.”
