Cambridge United sign Italian winger

Cambridge United have signed Piero Mingoia from Accrington Stanley on a free transfer as confirmed by their club website.

The 24-year-old came close to sealing himself into the Accrington history books this season after he was an ever present in the side as they came close to automatic promotion before eventually falling to AFC Wimbledon in the play offs.

Mingoia gave it his all in the play offs though and managed to score against Wimbledon to give his team the best chance of advancing to Wembley.

But after the disappointment of losing out on promotion, Mingoia has decided to leave Accrington and has signed a two year deal with Cambridge where he’ll hope to go one better with this season and help them to get promoted to League 1.

Mingoia started his career at Watford after coming through their academy but only managed to make 7 appearances for them. After a brief loan spell with non-league side Hayes and Yeading, he moved on loan to Accrington in the summer of 2012 before making the move permanent in January. Overall he made 136 appearances before moving to Cambridge.

Following the transfer, Mingoia said:“I’m absolutely delighted to get the deal done with the club.”

“It was a tough decision to leave Accrington, but I was really attracted to what the club want to do here, and the fact that the Manager showed a real interest in me.”

“Looking at the level that Shaun Derry played and seeing where he wants to take this club as the Manager, I wanted to work under him so joining Cambridge felt like a no brainer.”

“I’ll look to bring as much energy to the team as possible, and giving my all is a minimum requirement.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to score a few goals against Cambridge United in my career, so I’m now looking forward to scoring some wearing the Cambridge United shirt.”
