Portsmouth could sign former midfielder with over 200 appearances

Portsmouth have been linked with their former midfielder Matthew Taylor, according to a report.

Taylor, 34, is currently a free agent after leaving Burnley at the end of last season.  The midfielder made 39 appearances during his time with the club, scoring four goals.

Matthew Taylor is a name known by many, with the midfielder playing in 13 Premier League seasons during his career.

Taylor began his career with Luton Town in the Second Division but left to join Portsmouth in the First Division in July 2002.  The midfielder, who can also play left-back, was a regular in the team as Portsmouth were promoted to the Premier League.

Taylor went on to make over 200 appearances for Portsmouth over six years before leaving to join Bolton Wanderers after losing his place in the team in 2008.

This was a successful move for Taylor, with the midfielder getting back to playing regular Premier League games.

West Ham United then took an interest, and signed Taylor in July 2011.  Taylor made 28 Championship appearances as the club were promoted back to the Premier League under manager Sam Allardyce.

Taylor joined Burnley at the end of the 2013-14 season, looking to help the club stay in the Premier League.  After missing months due to injury, Taylor missed a vital penalty against Leicester City and Burnley were ultimately relegated.

After helping Burnley win promotion again last season, Taylor is now a free agent.  At 34, a return to Portsmouth could be on the cards.

The club will be looking to win promotion from League Two next season, and Taylor could provide vital experience after being promoted several times earlier in his career.
