Cellino facing suspension over illegal payment

The Yorkshire Post understands that Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino is likely to receive a suspension this week after his charge of breaching Football Association agent regulations in the transfer of Ross McCormack to Fulham.

McCormack’s agent, Derek Day, was also charged for his part in the incident. Leeds and Cellino have until Friday this week to officially respond to the charge.

A payment of £185,000 was paid to Day by Leeds United, with the intention of that fee then being passed over to McCormack’s advisor, who is Scottish boxing promoter Barry Hughes.

The transfer took place in 2014, but the Football Association issued the charge of May 16th following a lengthy investigation over the illegal payment, which lasted for several months.

Hughes is not licensed by the FA, making this illegal. FA rules clearly state that a club or representative must not authorise payment to any unregistered agent involving in an agency activity.

Italian Cellino had spoken of his confusion at the whole incident, stating his innocence against the range of allegations against him. This isn’t the only charge against Cellino as the FA continue to investigate if any rules were broken in the loan transfer of Adryan to Leeds from Brazilian side Flamengo, also in 2014.
