5 runners & riders to be the next Reading manager

Last week we published an article on the five names who were mentioned to be in the running for the Reading job in the immediate aftermath of Brian McDermott’s surprise sacking. Now the dust has settled, we can provide something of an update on the five most likely candidate to be McDermott’s successor.

If the betting is anything to go by, then we have four likely candidates to become the next manager at the Madejski Stadium. However, as the betting can sometimes be misleading, we have thrown in someone who is actually priced much bigger.

Therefore, sit back and enjoy a quick run through our five candidates to be the next manager of Championship side Reading.

Jaap Stam

It is already well-documented that this individual has already held talks with certain representatives with Reading over the job. He is actively looking to get into management, having served on the coaching staff of a few different clubs, most recently Dutch giants Ajax.

Brian Tevreden, who is now a key part of the Reading hierarchy, has previously worked with Stam during their time together in Holland. That is certainly a big tick in Stam’s column. One big cross is his sheer lack of managerial experience and outright experience of the Championship. It is a tough league as we know, but would he know how to set up his side against Birmingham City, Rotherham United or Preston North End to name just three random examples.

Of course, all managers need to start somewhere. He would surely have the instant support of the team, especially considering his exploits at a player. Many will know him from his Manchester United days, but he is looking to create new memories of himself, and Reading could be the ones to have a front row seat. He remains the favourite for the job.
