Stam could be the man to take over at Reading

Dutch publication De Telegraaf understands that former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has held discussions with Championship club Reading over becoming their head coach. Brian McDermott is still in charge, but reports in Holland suggests that the now former Ajax coach could might be heading back to England in the dugout.

Brian Tevreden, who is the director of football with the Royals, has previously worked with Stam in the past. Stam is understood to have rejected other coaching roles, with preference of returning back to the UK.

The Madejski Stadium club ended the season in 17th place last season. They ended the campaign without a win in even, losing six of those. During that time, they only failed to score in one of those, but conceded at least twice in six of the seven clashes as well.

The ex-Lazio centre back did coach with the Jong Ajax side, which is effectively their reserve side, but has since departed. He has regularly spoke about his desire to manage at the highest level and was briefly mentioned with being linked to the Ajax role earlier in the week, before Peter Bosz replaced the now departed Frank de Boer.

The 43-year-old has also held coaching positions within the Ajax first-team setup and fellow Eredivisie side FC Zwolle. After retiring, where he ended his playing career at Ajax, he also did some scouting work with Manchester United.

News of this alleged meeting comes somewhat out of the blue, as nobody necessarily expected anyone but Brian McDermott to be managing the club next season. It looks as though this is another typical case of watch this space.
