John Sheridan

One-time Leeds linked boss backed for League Two job

Oldham Athletic manager John Sheridan, who was heavily linked to becoming the new Leeds United manager recently, is now the odds-on favourite to take the job at League Two side Notts County.

The Magpies are searching for a new manager after Mark Cooper left to take on the job at Vanarama National League side Forest Green Rovers. Sheridan’s name, amongst many, was linked to the vacancy at Elland Road, but is he set to drop down a league instead of jumping up one?

The 51-year-old had held three different managerial jobs in the past three seasons. In addition to Oldham, he has spent time at Newport County and ended his two year stint at Plymouth Argyle prior to that. He returned to Boundary Park in January for his second spell at the helm.

The fact that Sheridan was so heavily linked in terms of the betting to the Leeds job doesn’t necessarily mean that he is bound for Meadow Lane, but the link has to be of interest given how he was mentioned for a Championship job only a week or so ago.

The 34-cap Republic of Ireland international certainly possesses plenty of experience in the lower echelons of the Football League and Notts County are a club in serious need of some stability and guidance. Perhaps they have seen what he has done in a short period of time with his recent clubs and felt that he could play a big role if given a longer spell somewhere, potentially Notts County.

Sheridan is no stranger to the city of Nottingham, having spent a very brief spell with Nottingham Forest in his playing days. He moved to the City Ground after ending his successful spell with Leeds, before then joining Sheffield Wednesday.
