Championship record breaker linked to Derby role

Bristol Post reports that Derby County are looking into the possibility of appointing a director of football, and Steve Coppell is name under serious consideration. The former Reading boss and Manchester United player held a similar position during spells at Crawley Town and Portsmouth.

Coppell has recently been working as a scout for FA Cup finalists and club that he managed on four separate occasions Crystal Palace. The 60-year-old could fit the bill for the type of character the Rams are looking for.

Following their play-off semi-final aggregate defeat to Hull City, the Derby hierarchy are busy making preparations for next season and the future of current boss Darren Wassall is under consideration. Tim Sherwood is the current favourite to be the next manager of the club.

It is also unclear as to what the future holds for Harry Redknapp at the iPro Stadium. He joined the club towards the tail end of the season to act as an experienced advisor to management rookie Wassall. The former Tottenham, Portsmouth and West Ham manager was regular seen in the stands communicating via telephone to coach Craig Short sitting in the dugout.

It is understood that Derby still want an experienced manager on the scene. Coppell is highly unlikely to want a full-on management role, but an advisory position or director of football role would suit him much more. Considering his past exploits at Championship level with Reading, who when Coppell was manager guided the club to the league title. The Royals gained 106 points in the process, which is the current Football League record for points achieved by a side within a season (with three points for a win).
