A statement on Rotherham United’s official club website confirms that manager Neil Warnock has left the club. The experienced football boss has decided against extending his contract at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
After guiding the Millers to Championship safety against the odds, Warnock has been in discussions with chairman Tony Stewart over the last few weeks. It has resulted in his leaving the club.
The 67-year-old’s name has been mentioned to a few football vacancies in recent times. However in the last few days, he has been made favourite to become the new manager of Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers, who are looking for a replacement after Paul Lambert left following discussions with the Venky’s owners.
The statement revealed that after ‘lengthy and protracted discussions’, Warnock will be moving on. The complete statement reads as follows,
Following lengthy and protracted discussions over the past two weeks, Rotherham United can confirm that Neil Warnock will not be the Manager of the Club going forward.
We would like to place on record our thanks to Neil and his support staff for the 16 games that they led the team at the end of the 2015/2016 campaign, and wish Neil, Kevin (Blackwell) and Ronnie (Jepson) health and happiness for the future.
We will be looking to release details of a new managerial appointment in due course.
Paul Davis, the Rotherham United writer at the Sheffield Star, has already spoken to chairman Stewart, who reveals that his relationship with Warnock remains strong and that the club ‘won’t waste time’ over naming his replacement. Manager’s already in work won’t put Stewart off approaching candidates if he feels that they are write for the job as well.
