Leeds charged after breaking agent rules in McCormack sale

The Football Association have confirmed that Leeds United have been charged for breaching Football Agent Regulations. This revolves around the 2014 transfer of Ross McCormack from Leeds to Championship rivals Fulham.

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino and Derek Day, the agent who authorised the transfer, have also both been charged for breaching FA rules and Football Agent Regulations respectively. All parties involved have until May 20th 2016 to reply to their respective charges.

McCormack, who still plays for Fulham, moved to Craven Cottage in a deal said to be worth in the region of £11million.  He’s not involved directly in this Football Association charge and can maintain an innocent stance throughout this situation.

Yorkshire Evening Post reports that the direct charge relates to a payment of £185,000 that Leeds United agreed to pay to agent Day. He is then supposed to have taken that fee on behalf of McCormack’s advisor Barry Hughes. As Hughes is not licensed by the Football Association, this is seen as a breach of Football Agent Regulations. Cellino’s participation in the deal is said to have also broken the rules.

The football club have elected not to react to this news at the time of writing. Past cases point to a likely fine for the football club, pointing in the case of Callum Chambers’ move from Southampton to Arsenal, where similar charges were brought about.

In other news, Yorkshire Evening Post also understands that the FA are still investigating Leeds and Cellino over the loan signing of Adryan from Flamengo from two years ago. This relates to third-party ownership, so news of this deal is expected to be brought to light at some point in the future.
