Swindon win race for rated non-league star

With the season still cooling down, teams’ eyes turn to bolstering their ranks in readiness for August, with talkSPORT reporting that Swindon are doing just that.

The Robins, who finished in a disappointing 16th place in League One have bolstered their attacking options by adding goal-scoring, non-league midfielder John Goddard to the ranks on a three year deal, with the option of a further year’s extension.

Goddard, who scored 20 goals last season for Woking, had attracted the attention of a number of Football League clubs but the Wiltshire-based side beat these to the signing of Goddard who was once on the books of Reading.

Swindon will no doubt be hoping that Goddard’s goals from the centre of the park go some way to complement the 24 League One goals scored by Nicky Ajose as Swindon no doubt will look to improve on where they finished last season.

Swindon chairman Lee Power expressed his joy at geting Goddard’s signing ove rthe line as well as the professional way that Wycombe handled negotiations. The Robins chairman said on the club website: “From the moment we were given permission to speak with the player and agree terms, Woking have been absolutely first class in their handling of the situation. I have been mightily impressed with the professional way in which Geoff Chapple has dealt with myself and it will be fitting for me to bring Swindon Town to Woking in pre-season to allow John to say farewell to his beloved fans.”

Woking manager Garry Hill said of his former charge: “John has been outstanding for me and of course, the club. He is well grounded and conducts himself brilliantly both on and off the pitch. He has had a fantastic season and for a midfield player to get the amount of goals he has, it’s no wonder that so many clubs were chasing his signature.”
