From World Cup to no club: These internationals were released by league clubs

It’s that time of year when clubs decide which players they wish to retain at the club, which players are seen as ‘dead wood’ and need to be cleared in order to orchestrate a promotion push, consolidate a league position or simply balance the books.

News that some of the players that have been released by clubs has caused quite a stir when fans look back at their decorated career and in some cases recent careers that have involved World cup campaigns or seasoned international players who have endured a fall from stardom.

Matthew Upson

Making only 7 appearances for MK Dons after being ravaged by injuries Matthew Upson was released by the relegated Championship club.

Upson has played at the highest level in football beginning his career with Luton before moving to Arsenal for £2m. He also played Premier league football Birmingham and with West Ham, Upson played in the World cup 2010. He made 21 appearances for England and scored twice, both against Germany. Once in a friendly in 2008 and again v Germany in the World Cup in 2010, scoring the only goal against the Germans in the last 16. He was playing for West Ham at the time of the 2010 World Cup and following their relegation he moved to Stoke City between 2011-2013, he then went on to play for Brighton and Hove Albion between 2013-2014 and then Leicester 2014-2015 and eventually MK Dons. He only made 5 appearances for Leicester and has struggled again with Injuries with Mk Dons making only 7 appearances before being released.
