Retained List: International set to depart Reading

It has been a challenging season for Reading and the owners recently released a statement revealing similar emotions. Brian McDermott is shaping up his squad ahead of next season and today they have released their retained list.

The major news to come out of the Madejski Stadium is that three first-team players are all but certain to let their contracts run down and depart this summer.

The major news isn’t necessarily unexpected and it is that Welsh international Hal Robson-Kanu is to leave the club. He made his debut way back in August 2009 and has enjoyed seven years as a professional on the books of the Royals. A good tournament for Wales and himself at the Euros this summer is a perfect opportunity for him to put himself in the shop window.

Anton Ferdinand will also move on following a difficult season in terms of gaining regular playing time. He has mainly found himself in and out of the team under the various different managers they have employed this season. Following two seasons, he is now searching for a new club.

Simon Cox will also be leaving the club once again, having rejoined for a second spell in 2014. He has only made nine appearances this season, and also spent time out on loan at Bristol City as well. He graduated through the Reading academy many years ago.

All of the loan players that were on the books have also been allowed to return to their clubs and won’t be returning permanently. Those are Matej Vydra, Alex Fernandez, Lucas Piazon, Ola John, Andrew Taylor and Michael Hector.

Several younger players have also been offered new contracts to enhance their development with the Championship club. Those are headlined by the likes of Rob Dickie, Dominic Hyam, Shane Griffin, Sean Long, Aaron Kuhl and Liam Kelly.
