Matthew Etherington – Peterborough United

Matthew Etherington made his Peterborough United debut under Barry Fry after coming through the ranks at Peterborough. It was Fry himself who spotted the youngster making waves for Falmouth Under-14s and it wasn’t long before he was on the pitch against Brentford on May 3 1997 and playing in a 2-1 Peterborough win at the age of 15 years and 262 days. All told, Etherington played 51 games for Post, scoring six goals, before a £500,000 move to Tottenham before the start of the 1999 season.

The young left winger didn’t settle at Spurs, and the Londoners swapped him with fellow London team West Ham on August 1 2003. Etherington played Xx games for the Hammers before a £2.25m move to Stoke on January 1 2009 – the former-Peterborough youngster making 177 appearances for the Potteries side, scoring 16 goals and setting up 38 assists. A chronic back injury forced him to retire in December 2014, bringing the curtain down on the then 33-year-old’s career

Next up is a youngster who is currently making a name for himself on Merseyside.
