Shrimps boss understands fans anger

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley understands why the fans are losing patience with him, after Tuesday’s 7-0 loss at Cambridge.

Five first-half goals from Cambridge put them on the way to an easy three points – leaving the Shrimps 20th – but amazingly 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

“I can understand people losing patience with me but I’ll keep my beliefs, keep working hard and come out fighting.” Bentley told The Visitor after the game.

“There’ll be a lot to take into consideration in the summer.”

The hosts made numerous changes to the defensive side of their team, and it showed against a Cambridge side that are five points short of a play-off place.

Morecambe were without Barry Roche, Adam Dugdale and Shaun Beeley, and Bentley admitted it was the most inexperienced backline the club have had, but insists the selections were all made for good reasons.

“We’ve got to live and learn. It’s a crushing defeat. The whole season has been a nightmare for one reason or another.” Bentley admitted.

“We’ve been excellent going forwards this season but defensively we’ve been shocking and that’s been highlighted tonight.

“We had an inexperienced backline and goalkeeper that got given the runaround by good players.”

The Shrimps have now conceded 18 goals in their last six league matches and face fellow strugglers Stevenage on Saturday, before heading to another promotion-chasing side in Exeter City.

“I can understand pointing the finger at me as manager but there’s a bigger picture people need to look at.” Bentley insisted.

“We’re trying to get one or two of our young lads into the team because ultimately we’ve got to bring them through.

“We don’t have the finances to go and bring in players who have got the experience at this level.

“We’ve got to get the balance right and it’s been a difficult season. But as manager of the football club I’ve got to do what’s right and there’s a lot to take into consideration between now and the end of the season.”
