Wigan’s Grigg on Latics’ promotion chances: “We’re not there yet.”

Wigan top scorer Will Grigg believes that despite The Latics having a 10 point gap over third place Bradford, his side still have work to do if they wish to secure promotion to the Championship.

A narrow 1-0 win at home to Coventry on Saturday saw Wigan further extend their lead at the top of the League One table, however no one inside the DW Stadium is celebrating quite yet.

“We are in a great position but, as we have said, we are not there yet, there is work to do,” commented Grigg, who netted Wigan’s winner, his 20th league goal of the campaign and 23rd in all competitions.

Grigg however acknowledged that the timing of Wigan’s winning run has been placed to perfection, with The Latics now in their richest vein of form all season long as the season heads towards a climax:

“It is the business end of the season, the timing of the run has been great, we just need to keep it going until the end of the season and we will be alright.”

A run of five consecutive victories and 20 games undefeated that has stretched over a remarkable four month period sees The Latics in prime position to secure both promotion and the league title in the coming weeks.

Grigg himself is hoping to secure his third successive promotion from League One, having done so with previous clubs Brentford and MK Dons in the last two campaigns.

Having become the first Latics striker in over a decade to net 20 league goals in a single season, Grigg recognised his contribution but remained humble, noting the importance of victory over any goal tallies:

“I am really pleased,

“I haven’t been feeling great all week to be honest and I didn’t train until Friday so it was nice to score and get to 20 league goals.

“The main thing was the three points.”

With five games remaining, Grigg will be hoping to fire Wigan over the line back to the Championship at the first attempt.
