Butterfield can be ‘special’ for Derby

Former Derby County player Chris Powell has insisted that midfielder Jacob Butterfield can be a special player for The Rams, reports the Derby Telegraph.

Powell was boss at Huddersfield Town, when Derby swooped for his star midfielder on the final day of last summers transfer window.

The Rams paid £4m for Butterfield, on the same day they broke their club record fee to pay £6m for Norwich man Bradley Johnson.

Johnson settled quickly at Derby, although Butterfield took more time to get used to his new surroundings.

However, he has still played 32 times for Derby this campaign, with 24 of those games being starts.

He has seven goals for The Rams.

He has been an unused substitute in Derby’s last two games as Head Coach Darren Wassall has opted for a midfield of Craig Bryson, Jeff Hendrick and George Thorne.

It remains to be seen in Butterfield can force his way back into the side for this weekends clash with Cardiff City, but ex Rams favourite Chris Powell has no doubts over the midfielders ability.

Jacob was a real special player for me in my time at Huddersfield,” said Powell.

“I have said it on record, he is one of the best players I have ever managed, a real talented boy. He will be good here at Derby.”

Powell also said how he first struggled when he signed for Derby from Southend in 1996.

He said:

“The first six months was really hard because Derby County is a special club, and a big club. It is a club that is well supported and you have to get used to that,” said Powell.

“Once you do, you just go and express yourself like I did in that team with Igor Stimac, Darryl Powell and Dean Sturridge, and so many great players. We had the time of our lives.

“I want that back here for this club, and Jacob will be a part of that. He will be a good player at Derby, for sure.”

Powell then went on to play for England.
